Your kindness can help someone get off the street. My grandfather, Morrie M. Cohen, who recently passed in December, was one of the most charitable people I’ve ever known. He believed deeply in giving back to his community, not just with money, but with time, compassion, and a genuine desire to uplift others. My cousins and I grew up watching him help those in need without expecting anything in return—he lived by the belief that kindness could change the world, one person at a time. But it wasn’t until one freezing december evening that I truly understood what that meant. I was walking home with arms full of gifts, bundled up in a warm coat, when I noticed someone sitting alone on a bench outside a store. He looked about my age—maybe even the exact same age—and he was huddled in a thin hoodie, visibly shaking in the cold. His eyes were hollow, not pleading, but exhausted. Something about him struck me deeply. It wasn’t just the cold or the contrast between us—it was the realization that our lives could have easily been reversed. That night, while I sat in a warm home surrounded by family, food, and comfort, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. That single moment sparked something in me—a passion to help the homeless and carry forward my grandfather’s legacy in a way that was uniquely mine. Since then, I’ve committed to raising awareness, supporting local shelters, and doing what I can to ensure no one feels invisible. Homelessness isn’t just a statistic—it’s made up of real people, with real stories, who deserve compassion and support. I don’t, and I will not ignore the problem anymore. I want to step up, like my grandfather did, and be part of the change. Want to join me in making a difference?
