In Abee’s Honour: Feeding Those in Need

Abensan was passionate about helping homeless individuals as much as he could. In his last few years, he would very often go around Montreal, Quebec, Canada handing out food and conversing with those currently residing on the streets, sometimes in the middle of winter. Last summer, Abee took his life. He had attempted suicide more than once prior and had physically recovered and been treated for mental health issues following those attempts, but on July 4th, 2021, Abensan left home and never returned. He died at the young age of 30.

In honour of Abee, and to highlight the importance of mental health awareness we are continuing to support the Old Brewery Mission. Among many services provided, the Old Brewery Mission serves hot meals to individuals currently going through a difficult time, just as Abee had done for many evenings and nights. By contributing to the Old Brewery Mission, Abee's loved ones and those who care will continue Abee’s legacy of displaying kindness, embodying humanity, and genuine care.

This campaign had a minimum goal of $3000, which had been eclipsed last year. The goal will be raised to $9000 to feed as many individuals as Old Brewery Mission in Montreal can accommodate. All the proceeds have gone directly to the Old Brewery Mission, which works with Montreal’s homeless men and women, meeting their essential needs while finding practical and sustainable solutions support mental health and to end chronic homelessness.

Mental health awareness is essential for not only the reduction of homelessness, but that of suicide as well. Being able to recognize the possible signs of mental struggle and reducing the stigma associated with it has the power to save lives. People need to feel empowered to seek out the proper support and treatment plan if they identify that they are in fact struggling. And the resources need to be available for those who need them as well. There are many people currently homeless who are also dealing with a mental health condition without the proper support. Abee went undiagnosed for nearly his entire life before he received his diagnosis. Despite his own struggles, he made it his mission in life to help those in need, and particularly, in the latter stage of his young life, to feed the hungry. And now, in honour of him, we will continue to raise funds to feed members of the Montreal homeless community.
